About Video Compressor

A video straight off a phone camera can easily be too large to email, upload to a form with a size limit, or send over a slow connection — and most online video compressors solve this by uploading your file to their server first, which can take longer than the compression itself for anything more than a minute or two of footage.

How the Video Compressor works

VIPToolkit's Video Compressor runs FFmpeg — the same engine behind most professional video tools — directly inside your browser using WebAssembly. Your video is never uploaded; it's transcoded locally on your own device. The first time you compress a video, the browser downloads the compression engine itself (about 30MB, one-time, cached for the rest of your session) before processing begins. Pick a preset — High Quality, Balanced, or Smallest File — or switch to Custom to set the quality level and maximum resolution yourself, then download the result once it's done.

Why does compression take a while?

Because everything happens on your own device rather than a powerful remote server, compression speed depends on your computer's processing power — a two-minute clip might take well under a minute, while a long video can take several. Keep the tab open while it works; closing it will stop the process.

Common use cases

Shrink a phone video below an email attachment or upload limit, compress footage before archiving it, or reduce a screen recording's file size before sharing it. Need to trim to just a portion of the video first? Check back soon — video trimming is coming to VIPToolkit next.
