Why are GIF files so large?

GIFs use an older LZW compression format that is far less efficient than modern video codecs. A 5-second clip at 480px wide typically produces a GIF between 2–8MB depending on motion complexity and frame rate. To reduce file size: lower the frame rate (10–12fps is acceptable for most content), reduce the output width, and keep clips under 5 seconds where possible.
